# Configure and review tax controls

**Settings → Business settings → Taxes.** For the authorised accounting/tax
reviewer. This guide describes product controls, not which treatment is correct
for the restaurant's goods, location, registration, or date.

1. Use **Add tax rate**, or a country template as an unsaved starting point.
2. Enter Name, Report identifier and Rate. A tracked zero rate differs from
assuming unknown or exempt treatment is zero.
3. Choose **Included in price** or **Added at checkout** and review the effect
   on displayed prices and totals.
4. Choose **All except exclusions** or **Selected only**. They have opposite
default meanings; review existing rules before changing strategy.
5. Add charge-family, category/item, location and order-type targets where
applicable. Check included targets versus exclusions, not only the rate name.
6. Inspect **Review effective treatment**, then save and verify the intended
order, booking charge and document through an agreed safe test process.

## Review before saving

Changing strategy can reverse what matching rules mean. Read the confirmation
and preview rather than blindly retaining the old targets. Missing rule choices
can mean locations/categories/items failed to load; **Retry** while preserving
existing settings instead of saving an empty replacement.

The current preview distinguishes original-charge refunds, deposit credits, and
gift-card timing. Gift-card mode is configured separately in gift-card settings;
this page determines configured rates/targets. Do not infer legal treatment
merely from the product label or use a new rule to hide an incorrect historic
transaction.

Country templates are drafts, not compliance approval. Validate the applicable
treatment with the responsible adviser and tax authority. For UK rates, use
[GOV.UK VAT guidance](https://www.gov.uk/vat-rates); rates depend on the actual
goods/services. Do not apply another country's or business's template by
default.

Review reported tax through order/receipt and [daily reports](/daily-reports),
including missing historic details and refunds. A displayed tax breakdown is not
by itself a filed return or proof of payment to the authority.

After an uncertain save, reopen the existing rate/targets before repeating.
Escalate with business, rate, intended scope, relevant transaction/document,
observed treatment and exact error; keep financial records within authorised
access.
