# Configure a promotion and verify eligibility

**Console: Menu → Promotions.** For the manager responsible for offers. Search
existing promotions and check active, type, and trigger filters before creating
another one. A saved active promotion can affect eligible orders immediately.

## Create or edit

1. Select **Add promotion** or open the existing record. Set **Internal Name**
and guest-facing **Display Name**. **Description** is internal notes, not
guest-visible terms; arrange the guest communication separately.
2. Choose **Percentage** or **Fixed amount** and enter the benefit. Percentage
input is the displayed percentage, not a decimal fraction. Check the new
value again if you change discount type.
3. For a percentage, check **Maximum discount**. Zero means no cap. Set the
intended **Usage limit**; **Number of uses** is a total-use limit.
4. Choose **Automatic**, **Promo Code**, or **Manual**. A code trigger needs the
actual code guests will enter. Check **Minimum Subtotal** if required.
5. Review locations, categories, items, and order types. **Only these** and
**Everything except these** produce opposite targeting. Empty selection can
mean all, so read the visible summary before saving.
6. Check **Not for guest orders**, **Not for staff orders**, and schedules. No
schedule means the offer is available at any time, subject to its other
conditions. Choose the intended active status deliberately.
7. Select **Create Promotion** or **Save Changes**, then reopen and verify the
saved benefit, eligibility, schedule, and status.

## Verify without surprising service

Agree a safe test with the shift leader. Use the intended location and order
type, eligible items and subtotal, correct trigger/code, and service time. Check
the actual discount and final total. A promotion appearing in the list is not
proof it applies to that particular order.

Do not change an unrelated live offer or clear its restrictions simply to make a
test succeed. Check the current order and guest request before applying an
authorised manual promotion. See [Daily reports](/daily-reports) for recorded
sales and discount totals; a benefit is not a refund.

## Save and deletion recovery

If validation highlights name, benefit, or code, correct that field. Percentage
must be within the editor's accepted range and a fixed amount must be positive.
**Close without saving?** offers **Keep editing** or **Discard changes**.

Deletion stops future application and cannot restore the promotion; already
discounted orders are unaffected. Read the confirmation before deleting. After
an uncertain save, reopen the same promotion before creating another one. Use
[Offer troubleshooting](/troubleshooting/offers) for a mismatch during service.
